How To Use Google Docs With Just Your Voice: Step-By-Step Guide

Google has turned Google Docs into something far more futuristic than a regular writing app. Announced at Google I/O 2026, the US-based tech giant introduced “Docs Live,” a new Gemini-powered feature that lets users create and edit documents simply by talking naturally. And unlike traditional voice typing, this is not just about converting speech into text anymore. Docs Live is designed to behave more like an AI collaborator sitting beside you, listening, organising your thoughts, restructuring messy ideas, and even helping draft complete documents in real time.
What Exactly Is Docs Live?
The search giant says Docs Live uses Gemini AI to transform casual spoken thoughts into properly structured writing. That means users no longer need to carefully dictate punctuation marks or robotic commands like “new paragraph” after every sentence.
Instead, you can simply speak naturally. Rambling ideas, unfinished thoughts, random notes, half-formed concepts, Docs Live is reportedly built to handle all of it. Gemini then organises the information, adjusts the tone, and turns it into a cleaner first draft automatically.
Docs Live Can Pull Information From Other Google Apps
One of the more interesting additions is cross-app integration. With permission enabled, Docs Live can access information from Gmail, Google Drive, Chat and even the web while you’re speaking.
For example, users could say something like: “Pull my resume from Drive and add my latest work experience.”
Gemini then fetches the relevant information and inserts it directly into the document.
Google also says users will be able to verbally edit sections, rearrange paragraphs, rewrite tone, or ask Gemini to refine content conversationally while writing.
Google Chrome And Search Will Soon Detect AI-Generated Images, Here’s How
How To Use It:

Step 1: Open Google Docs

Launch Google Docs inside the Chrome browser and open a document.

Step 2: Enable Voice Typing

Click on Tools in the top menu and select Voice typing.
A microphone icon will appear on-screen.

Step 3: Start Speaking

Click the microphone icon and begin speaking clearly.
Unlike Docs Live, you still need to say commands like “period,” “comma,” or “new line” manually.

Step 4: Stop Dictation

Once finished, click the microphone icon again to stop recording.
When Will Docs Live Be Available?
While Docs Live is still rolling out, Google Docs already includes a standard voice typing tool that works through Google Chrome on desktop. According to Google, Docs Live will begin rolling out sometime this summer. The feature will initially arrive for Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra subscribers on both Android and iOS devices. No wider public release timeline has been confirmed yet.
