JTC chairman Loo Choon Yong said: “As a small city state, we are constantly pushing boundaries in our quest to overcome our scarce land resource. The Jurong Rock Caverns required us to venture into unfamiliar grounds and surmount engineering challenges never encountered before. Its success attests to our resolve to persevere and diligently deliver innovative and sustainable infrastructure solutions for Singapore.” Construction of the five caverns started in 2007. Their combined capacity of 1.47 million cubic metres is equivalent to 600 Olympic-sized swimming pools. Two of them, completed in March, have been leased to Jurong Aromatics Corporation who will store condensate, a feedstock for its aromatics plant. Police say that the car was stopped early on Sunday morning at a vehicle checkpoint, but accelerated after being asked to open the car boot and rammed through police barricades. Suspected drugs were found on one of those detained, police said. Officers opened fire because the car "was endangering the lives of officers", the statement added. Police say they are in control of the situation. Extra security is in place due to the conference, which is attended by senior defence leaders including US Secretary of Defence Ashton Carter, who spoke at the summit on Saturday. Singapore is thought to have one of the lowest crime rates in the world. The country has tough anti-drug laws, and has enforced capital punishment in some cases of drug trafficking. SINGAPORE: Singapore's High Commissioner to Malaysia Ong Keng Yong on Tuesday met Othman Hashim, the secretary-general of Malaysia's Foreign Affairs Ministry, to clarify allegations that Singapore spied on Malaysia. Mr Ong was summoned by Malaysia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs after fresh media reports surfaced, alleging that Singapore had aided an intelligence group in spying on Malaysia. Speaking to Channel NewsAsia, Mr Ong said he was unable to comment on the allegations because he does not have any specific information. He said he has referred the media reports to the relevant agencies in Singapore. Mr Ong also took the opportunity to reaffirm that Singapore values good relations with Malaysia and that both countries have an excellent bilateral relationship and cooperate closely on many matters of common interest. He added that Singapore has no interest in doing anything that might harm its partners or the friendship between the two countries. Malaysia had called in the high commissioner from Singapore over a media report that said the city-state helped facilitate US-Australian surveillance in the region. Foreign Minister Anifah Aman had already summoned the heads of the US and Australian missions earlier in November in protest over reports that a vast US-led surveillance network included a listening post in America's Malaysian embassy. Malaysia is "extremely concerned" about the Singapore report, Anifah said in a statement. Monday's report in the Sydney Morning Herald said Singapore and South Korea were playing key roles in a "Five Eyes" intelligence network involving the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and New Zealand. It quoted a top-secret US National Security Agency (NSA) map that it said was published by Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad. As a major hub for regional telecommunications traffic, Singapore was an important link in the surveillance network, it said. www.channelnewsasia.com/news/asiapacific/s-pore-high-commissioner/900370.html

"It's a page in Chinese history... this incident, once upon a time, took place in China." Find out what political cartoonist Morgan Chua has to say about the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989, and what he hopes his new and updated Tiananmen: 25th Anniversary Edition, would achieve today. For more information, please visit: http://www.epigrambooks.sg/tiananmen-25th-anniversary-edition/ ABOUT TIANANMEN (25th ANNIVERSARY EDTION): First published in 1989, acclaimed former Far Eastern Economic Review editorial cartoonist Morgan Chua's Tiananmen takes an emotional yet incisive look at the aftermath of the 4 June protests and the international response it provoked. This updated edition commemorates the 25th anniversary of this watershed incident with new cartoons and a look at where the key figures involved then, are today. ABOUT MORGAN CHUA: Morgan Chua is a Singapore-born cartoonist who started drawing for the Singapore Herald in 1970. When the paper was closed down by the government in 1971, Chua moved to Hong Kong and joined The Asian for nine months. He then joined the Far Eastern Economic Review (F.E.E.R), where he started as an editorial artist and over 24 years rose to creative director. At the Review, he was known for his incisive single-panel political cartoons and for arresting and provocative magazine cover choices. He has also drawn cartoons for Hong Kong's Next Magazine and Apple Daily. Chua's publications include Tiananmen (1989), My Singapore (2000, 2008), Divercity Singapore: A Cartoon History of Immigration (2010) and In Memory of Madam Kwa Geok Choo 1920-2010 (2011).
