Astronauts May Finally Have A Base To Stay On The Moon: NASA

Have you ever wondered what if we get to have a home on the Moon? NASA is already thinking in this direction. Soon, the space agency will explain how it plans to turn lunar missions from short visits into something more lasting. It will hold a news conference at 2 PM EDT (11:30 PM IST) on Tuesday, May, 26, 2026, to share updates on its Moon Base programme, an initiative to build a base for astronauts on the Moon.

NASA To Brief Media On Moon Base Plans And Lunar Expansion
The American space agency is set to hold a news conference on May 26, 2026 at its Washington headquarters, where the officials will provide updates on its Moon Base programme. This briefing will focus on progress toward building a sustained human presence on the Moon, especially around its South Pole.
As per NASA, the Moon Base initiative will give wings to the space agency’s long term vision to support continuous human activity on the Moon. This programme aims to expand scientific research and also explore commercial opportunities beyond Earth. The space organisation highlights that the wider goal of this initiative is not only explorations, but building infrastructure that may support astronauts living and working on the surface of the Moon for extended periods.

NASA said in a tweet, “We’re building a Moon Base! @NASAMoonBase will serve as a habitat where astronauts live and work during long-term science missions. Join us at 2pm ET on Tuesday, May 26, for a live news event where we’ll share updates on our lunar exploration plans.”

How To Watch The Briefing
This briefing will be streamed live on the official YouTube channel of NASA. Media representatives who cannot attend in person will be able to submit questions by phone after registering in advance. NASA says accreditation is required for participation with RSVPs.
The Moon Base project is part of NASA’s larger vision of space exploration, which includes preparing for future human missions to Mars. Officials describe this phase as a “golden age” of innovation, where astronauts will take on more challenging missions deeper into space.
