Google’s Own AI Researchers Allegedly Don’t Trust Its Hiring AI, Here’s Why

Google is among the top big tech that has been leading AI developments. However, one of its own AI research teams raised concerns about relying on the company’s internal AI hiring system. According to a document seen by Bloomberg, the AGI Safety and Alignment Team at Google DeepMind is asking candidates applying for certain jobs to complete a separate form along with their regular application. The purpose is to make sure their CV reaches a human member of the team rather than being missed by the company’s internal recruitment systems.

DeepMind Team Warns Candidates About AI Screening
According to the report, the team has warned applicants that there was a possibility their CV could be incorrectly screened out or take too long to reach the people responsible for hiring.
The document allegedly told candidates, “We have an applications system with a non-trivial probability your CV will be screened out incorrectly or take too long to reach us.”
It added that completing the additional form would ensure that someone from the team personally reviews the application. Additionally, the document carried a warning asking people not to share it widely, highlighting the internal nature of the guidance.

Google Denies Its AI Wrongly Rejects Applicants
Google has reportedly denied the suggestion that its recruitment systems incorrectly filter candidates. A Google DeepMind spokesperson told Bloomberg that the company is focusing on finding and hiring the most qualified people. Moreover, the spokesperson explained that the special form was created by the team to send applications directly to members of the team rather than relying entirely on the normal recruiter review process.
The spokesperson also reportedly stressed that the process does not give candidates an easier route into the company, saying, “But there are no shortcuts to getting hired.”
Interestingly, the DeepMind team was not only concerned about AI screening applications. It also warned candidates against relying too heavily on AI when preparing their applications.
The additional form reportedly tells applicants, “A real human will read these. These humans get really tired of reading LLM answers, because they all sound very same.” While AI continues to screen applicants, it eventually becomes necessary for them to somehow float their CVs to humans.
