Microsoft has announced multiple new capabilities for its Copilot app, including a coding tool and an always-on artificial intelligence agent, as the firm is seeking to transform its AI assistant into a complete setup for office workers. The firm is also integrating its Office applications Word, PowerPoint, and Excel directly in Copilot, letting users work collaboratively on these applications without exiting the AI tool. Microsoft is pacing up to expand Copilot beyond being a chat-based tool and make it a complete platform like ChatGPT or Claude are in the current scenario.
The firm also unveiled ‘Code’ to allow users building apps, dashboards, and other software using natural language prompts. The tool is backed by the same tech as GitHub Copilot and will roll out in early access for the customers by the end of this month. All those who have 365 Premium and Pro will be getting to preview the same later this year. Microsoft is also releasing an ‘Autopilot’, which is a rework of ‘Scout’ AI agent that the brand dropped in June 2026 through a private preview. The digital coworkers will carry its own identity in the firm and have particular permissions that a user can control.
Corporate Vice President of Copilot, Annie Pearl, said, ‘I think it’s been very hard for many organizations to bring agents into the enterprise because of security, compliance and governance concerns. So we’ve worked… to make sure that we were building this in a way that would really be able to be used in the enterprise.’
Microsoft also brought cost management capabilities to the table to let some employees have direct insight into the costs tied to their usage of AI. And all of this comes at a time when enterprises are heavily worried about skyrocketing AI usage and unexpected costs. It will be intriguing to see if these moves will bring Copilot in competition with ChatGPT and Claude.
