Verizon Down: Over 180,000 Affected By Massive Network Outage; Why Are Phones Going On SOS?

Verizon was hit by a large-scale network disruption on Wednesday, with subscribers across multiple states reporting their phones abruptly lost service and were stuck in “SOS” mode, which prevents normal calls and data use. Outage tracker DownDetector showed a sharp spike beginning just before 9 a.m. Pacific Time, with more than 180,000 reports logged.
Complaints flooded X from users in states including Florida, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.

While phones in SOS mode can still place emergency 911 calls via other networks or satellite connections, many users said they were unable to make regular calls. Verizon’s support team acknowledged the issue, stating, “We are aware of an issue impacting wireless voice and data services for some customers. Our engineers are engaged and are working to identify and solve the issue quickly. We understand how important reliable connectivity is and apologize for the inconvenience.”
