Why Google’s AI Search Cannot Thrive Without Publishers

Google has changed the way we search with its AI-powered mode, and the direct negative impact of the same is being felt by the publishers. As per the latest updates, instead of showing only a list of links to the users, now the AI Search of Google will provide direct summaries, recommendations, and answers within the search page itself. This could sound pretty convenient from a user’s point of view, but the publishers had to bite the bullet for sure as they lose valuable traffic and advertising revenue as well. But the main point here is that the Search ecosystem of Google also needs publishers, and its AI may possibly not thrive without them.

Why Google’s AI Search Needs Publishers?

The Artificial Intelligence systems of Google do not independently discover facts or do original reporting. They gather data from reviews, news reports, forums, research papers, and expert opinions that are available on the internet. To be precise, every AI-generated answer is mostly based on the information developed and published by bloggers, researchers, journalists, and independent websites. Publishers offer freshness and credibility, which AI fails to deliver. And without publishers continuously updating and verifying content, AI can do nothing and become outdated and more unreliable.

Publishers have a major concern that Google’s AI Mode is eating their traffic, reducing clicks, and impacting ad revenue. And if the publishers will stop investing in high-quality journalism, then Google’s AI systems will also take a hit in terms of fresh data unavailability. At this point in time, it can be said that Google’s AI search and publishers are both deeply connected, out of which Google is trying to gather a lion’s share of everything. But yes, this setup cannot go on for eternity, and Google will have to come up to a middle ground where the publishers and Google’s own AI systems can both thrive.
