OpenAI may change how its ChatGPT app works. The Sam Altman-led firm is reportedly geared up to bid farewell to its ChatGPT Classic desktop app, offering users a date to move to its newer application. According to 9To5Mac, OpenAI is displaying a retirement notice to users, informing that the older app will be discontinued on January 30, 2027. On the other hand, OpenAI will plan another significant change by introducing ChatGPT and Work together under a single platform.
ChatGPT Classic App Reportedly Retires On January 30, 2027
OpenAI introduced a new desktop app, giving users ChatGPT, Work and Codex together in a single interface. After its launch, the company’s older ChatGPT desktop app was renamed ChatGPT Classic.
However, the report notes that the transition did not go down well with all users. The new app allegedly replaced the nativemacOS app with an Electron-based version, while its interface also faced criticism for being confusing. As a result, OpenAI reportedly made several changes to address these issues. These included adding a Chat and Work toggle at the top of the application and a sidebar menu that allows users to switch between ChatGPT and Codex.
Meanwhile, the older ChatGPT Classic app reportedly received fewer updates. The San Francisco-based company is reportedly retiring the older app. Users opening the ChatGPT Classic are reportedly shown a notification saying that the app will stop working on January 30,2027.
The notification reads, “This app will retire on January 30, 2027. Get the latest features in the new ChatGPT app. Your full chat history comes with you, so you can pick up where you left off.”
Alongside the retirement of ChatGPT Classic, OpenAI is preparing another change to its desktop experience. According to an email sent to users and reported by 9to5Mac, the company will begin testing a combined Chat and Work experience in the coming weeks.
The test may initially be available to a small group of users. It could bring ChatGPT’s regular conversational features and Work’s advanced capabilities into the same interface.
