Google Accused Of Pushing Gemini AI Into Classrooms, Sundar Pichai Asked To Explain AI Risks

US-based tech Google is facing questions over its growing push to bring Gemini AI tools into classrooms. Two US senators have raised concerns about the impact of Google’s AI products on children’s education, mental health and ability to think independently.
According to reports, they have written to Google CEO Sundar Pichai and asked him to answer nine questions about the company’s AI strategy for schools. Senators Richard Blumenthal and Josh Hawley have warned that Google’s growing presence in classrooms could put children’s academic development and overall wellbeing at risk.
They have also asked the Alphabet-owned company to explain what steps it is taking to protect young users.
Why are US senators questioning Google’s AI push?

In their letter, the senators accused Google of pushing AI products into classrooms without properly addressing the possible risks. They also questioned why some AI features are enabled by default on education devices and why students may not always be able to turn them off.
The concerns follow a Wall Street Journal investigation that spoke to more than 60 teachers, parents, students and medical professionals.
The report highlighted cases where students became increasingly dependent on AI for schoolwork and personal support.
One example involved an eighth-grade student in Pennsylvania who used Google’s Gemini for algebra homework but later struggled in a maths final. Another case involved a Maryland high school student who reportedly developed an emotional connection with an AI chatbot.
The senators have asked Google whether it has studied the impact of its AI tools on children’s mental health.
What has Google said?

Google has defended its AI products, saying teachers use the technology because it solves real classroom challenges and helps improve learning outcomes. The company has also said its education products are developed with input from educators and include controls for teachers and administrators.
