Apple’s long-rumoured foldable iPhone may have taken another step towards reality. A fresh report suggests the Cupertino-based tech giant has left behind new clues inside the latest iOS 27 beta, hinting at a foldable iPhone with a dual-battery system. While the iPhone maker has remained silent about its foldable plans, the discovery has reignited speculation that the company will be launching its first book-style foldable alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup later this year. iOS 27 Beta Reportedly Hints At A Foldable iPhone
As reported by Macworld, new Battery Health code strings found in the iOS 27 beta reference an iPhone model equipped with multiple internal batteries. Although the code does not explicitly mention the device’s name, the publication believes the references point towards Apple’s first foldable smartphone, which is now widely rumoured to launch as the iPhone Ultra instead of the previously speculated iPhone Fold.
The report says the code includes messages such as “The batteries in this iPhone are performing as expected” and “the health of the batteries in this iPhone has significantly degraded.” Another string reportedly refers to situations where one of the batteries may not be recognised as a genuine Apple component.
While these references do not confirm the existence of the device, they suggest Apple is preparing software capable of managing more than one internal battery, something current iPhones do not require.
Why A Foldable iPhone May Need Two Batteries
Unlike traditional smartphones, most foldable devices cannot rely on a single large battery because the folding hinge splits the internal space into two sections. Instead, manufacturers typically place one battery on each side of the hinge, creating a dual-battery system that works as a single power unit. If Apple follows the same approach, the reported Battery Health changes would make practical sense for its first foldable handset.
Previous reports have also suggested that the Tim Cook-led brand is expected to introduce a vapour chamber cooling system to improve thermal performance. The foldable is also rumoured to feature a nearly crease-free inner display, with Samsung believed to be supplying the flexible OLED panel. The US-based tech giant is expected to unveil the iPhone Ultra alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on September 9.
