OpenAI is in talks to move a little slower in terms of development of its most advanced artificial intelligence ecosystems. According to a report published by Bloomberg, citing people familiar with the matter, CEO Sam Altman told the employees this week that OpenAI could slow down its AI work and do the same together with leading AI companies. The discussion happened at a time when there are growing concerns across the AI industry about whether the technology is advancing faster than companies can put safety barriers on them. As per a report, OpenAI has started slowing parts of model development and even paused some internal AI training in recent months because of safety concerns. In July 2026, Sam Altman also said he had spoken with White House officials about the ‘requirement’ to pace AI development.
The latest internal discussion at OpenAI comes as more researchers and AI workers are raising concerns about how quickly the technology is developing and the harm it could possibly cause to human civilisation. Furthermore, OpenAI’s senior scientist Jakub Pachocki warned about the risks related to advanced AI. And the same was the case with Jacob Coxon, who recently left Anthropic, citing concerns related to the rapid development pace of AI. He wrote, ‘Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives. More thoughts below.’
Anthropic researcher Evan Hubinger also backed his warning and said, ‘We really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans! I personally think it is >10% within the next decade. I believe Anthropic is trying its best, but we do not yet have a plan to solve alignment for superintelligence and are not clearly on track to.’ Amidst all this, the lawmakers of the United States are already asking for a pause on advanced AI development. The next couple of months are going to be pretty crucial for AI development because of all that is going on in the background.
