The US-based software giant Microsoft is reportedly planning to launch its next-generation Maia 300 AI chip as early as September. The company is looking to expand its homegrown AI chip business as they want to reduce its dependence on Nvidia’s expensive processors.
According to a report by The Information, citing people with direct knowledge of the plans, the Satya Nadella-led company could publicly introduce the Maia 300 chip next month.
Microsoft first introduced its Maia AI chip in November 2023. However, the company has been slower than some of its rivals in bringing the chips into large-scale production. The Maia series is designed to support the growing computing demand from artificial intelligence workloads.
The company is now looking to significantly increase production of its AI chips and get major cloud customers to adopt them. Anthropic is reportedly among the companies Microsoft wants to persuade to use its homegrown chips.
According to the report, Microsoft has also been discussing manufacturing plans with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). The Information revealed that Microsoft is in talks with TSMC to secure manufacturing capacity for more than 300,000 units of its AI chips for delivery in 2027.
The push comes at a time when demand for AI computing hardware continues to rise. Jensen Huang’s Nvidia currently dominates the market for high-end AI processors, which are widely used by technology companies and cloud providers to train and run advanced AI models.
For Microsoft, developing its own chips could help the company reduce its reliance on Nvidia and potentially lower hardware costs over time. It could also give Microsoft greater control over the hardware used to power its AI services and cloud infrastructure.
However, Microsoft still has a long way to go before its homegrown chips can compete at scale with Nvidia’s widely adopted AI processors.
