Elon Musk could be dubbed one of the most unpredictable tech personalities of all time. And now, he has taken X and the globe by storm with the latest announcement of making the entire codebase of X open source. The Chief Executive Officer of X and Tesla took to X and said, ‘Once we have completed our review for security vulnerabilities, we will make the entire codebase of X open source, with no exceptions.
Moreover, we will invite third-party reviewers to examine the system that is running to confirm that the open-source code is what is running.
Trust through total transparency is the only thing that should be believed.’
This move by Elon Musk has opened a new gate of trouble and debate for all other social media platforms like Reddit, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and more. If X stands tall as the only major social platform whose algorithms and systems can be independently audited, then regulators and users may start asking tough questions to other platforms. Furthermore, other platforms could also be asked to publish more open-source parts and technical documentation for their platforms.
That’s not it; X revealing algorithms will create a new high for people trusting a platform, as after this move, no user is going to just blindly trust a social media platform, and if they do, they will be asking for elevated transparency, just like X is going to offer.
This will also benefit X in faster bug discoverability, early vulnerability detection, better code quality, and community driven improvements for their platform. And yes, the AI recommendation algorithms on the platform could become heavily transparent, allowing researchers to study these systems in a detailed manner and also providing better public understanding of the same as well. This step could also woo the governments all over the globe, as they have been demanding privacy for a very long time now.
