For all the Apple fans out there eyeing the company’s upcoming MacBook lineup, there might be good news. Apple is reportedly set to introduce a redesigned MacBook series with OLED models, which could be thinner and significantly lighter than the current-generation laptops.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has suggested a new detail about the upcoming MacBook Pro models, which are expected to bring several major changes to Apple’s premium laptop range. According to Gurman, Apple has redesigned the internal structure of the laptop to reduce its weight while making the device easier to carry. The new models are also expected to feature OLED displays, touchscreen support and Apple’s latest M5 Pro and M5 Max chips.
New MacBook Pro Could Be Significantly Lighter
In his latest Power On newsletter, Gurman said the upcoming MacBook Pro models with OLED displays will be “significantly lighter” than the existing models. “Apple has reengineered the machine’s interior, miniaturising parts and rearranging components to make the computer much easier to carry,” Gurman said.
The current MacBook Pro can weigh up to 4.7 pounds, depending on the configuration. In comparison, Apple’s MacBook Air weighs up to 3.3 pounds, while the MacBook Neo weighs around 2.7 pounds. Apple’s focus on reducing the weight could make the next MacBook Pro considerably easier to carry, especially for users who frequently travel or move between workspaces.
Six Major Changes Reportedly Coming
The weight reduction could be the latest addition to the list of changes reportedly planned for the OLED MacBook Pro. Based on the information reported so far, the upcoming models may bring six major upgrades:
OLED display
Touchscreen support
Dynamic Island replacing the existing notch
M5 Pro and M5 Max chips
Thinner design
Significantly lighter body
Apple is reportedly targeting an October or November launch for the new MacBook Pro models with OLED displays. Gurman has also reiterated that Apple is testing these laptops with macOS 27.2, which is currently available in beta.
The upcoming OLED MacBook Pro models are expected to sit above the existing MacBook Pro lineup. This means they could be positioned as more premium machines and may also carry higher price tags.
