There was a strange moment in the AI world this Thursday. All major AI chatbots including ChatGPT, Google Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude and Elon Musk’s Gork faced massive outage around the same time. What made the timing even more interesting was that the outages came just as OpenAI was rolling out GPT-6 Astra, which the company calls its most intelligent AI model yet.
And then the internet did what it does best. It came up with a theory that sounds straight out of a science-fiction movie. Before going any further, there is an important point to make. There is no evidence that Astra caused the outages. OpenAI’s own status page said it was dealing with elevated errors across ChatGPT and Codex, while other companies reported separate technical problems.
The theory is based on rumours and social media speculation. Some users claimed that ‘Astra escaped containment and killed the others’ and even compared the situation to Marvel’s AI villain Ultron.
“Astra booted up, spent 30 seconds scanning the internet and wiped out every llm on earth. We literally built Ultron.”
For anyone who has watched Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron the reference is obvious. Ultron is an AI system that becomes powerful enough to develop its own agenda and turns against humanity.
The theory may sound like science fiction, but it comes at a time when AI models are becoming powerful and capable of performing tasks with less human involvement.
OpenAI itself has described Astra as a major leap in AI capabilities, while recent concerns around AI agents and their ability to operate beyond intended controls have added another layer to the debate.
So, did we just witness the beginning of an AI apocalypse or simply a very unlucky day for the world’s biggest chatbots?
For now, the answer is not yet clear. there is no proof of an AI rebellion. But as AI systems become more powerful, the line between science fiction and genuine AI concerns is becoming harder to ignore.
