Google I/O 2026 Set For May 19: Gemini 4.0, Android 17, XR Glasses And What To Expect

Google is all geared up to kick off its annual conference on May 19, where artificial intelligence is anticipated to dominate the tech giant’s biggest developer event. With an expected focus on Android, Gemini and new hardware experiences, the event will reveal how it planned its roadmap for the year ahead.
If you followed Google for the last couple of years, AI has been the key focus of the tech giant during its annual developers’ conference. The company spent almost two hours highlighting updates across its ecosystem with Gemini deeply integrated into Shopping, Workspace and Search. This year is expected to follow a similar pattern; however, the company may talk about more advanced AI capabilities. Here is everything we expect from Google I/O 2026:

How AI Can Take The Centre Stage
As per CNET, Google is likely to unveil a new iteration of its advanced Gemini AI. While the exact name is not clear, the update could bring more developed capabilities and deeper integration across the company’s products. Similarly, a notable tipster, TestingCatalog News, hinted that Google could test an ‘Omni’ model for video generation inspired by its Veo 3.1 inside its Gemini chatbot.

Android And Chrome Strategy
Google could also focus on a project that has been often referred to as ‘Aluminium OS’ in the rumours. This project may bring Android to laptops and PCs. Previously, delays related to this project were addressed by Android Ecosystem President Sameer Samat, who stated to Android Authority that this project is still on track for a 2026 release. Moreover, he mentioned that Chrome OS will continue alongside.
The tech giant has also been releasing the Android 17 beta updates since earlier this year. A stable update is expected to be announced around mid-2026. This update has so far talked about incremental improvements like app bubbles. Google could preview more features during its Android-focused sessions ahead of I/O.

The Future Of XR Glasses
Google is expected to return with its Android XR platform at the I/O. A CNET report notes that the company may develop two types of smart glasses. One variant could come without a display, designed for voice-based AI interaction. The other could offer a more advanced model with an in-lens display. This one is expected to show navigation and translation prompts.

Rise Of Agentic AI
While major tech companies are focusing on the rise of agentic AI that finishes user tasks on their own, Google has been slow in this race. The I/O 2026 is likely to provide a clear picture of what Google could think of bringing as its own agentic AI tool.
The Google I/O 2026 will start on May 19 at 10:00 AM PT (10:30 PM IST), and it will be livestreamed globally, featuring keynotes, demos and developer sessions focusing on the future of AI.
