Google Planning To Kill Search Results? Company Clarifies On AI Redirect Feature

Google has been making headlines for killing the search results with its AI-powered updates. The feud between big tech companies and publishers highlights how AI-led search features are using the original data from news outlets and creators to train AI. Now, Google has clarified that a Chrome feature which seemed to send users directly to AI-generated answers rather than traditional search results was an error.
According to Android Headlines, an issue surfaced in Chrome Canary, an experimental browser version from Google. It raised serious questions whether the company was planning to replace the standard search pages with AI conversations.

Here’s What Google Said
Rajan Patel, the vice president of search engineering at Google, said that the feature was never intended for the public release and it was only being tested internally. This issue gained traction when users discovered a hidden setting in Chrome Canary called “Fulfil Searchbox Queries in AI Mode”.

When the feature was enabled, it reportedly bypassed Google’s popular search results and sent queries directly into the AI Mode. Rather than seeing a list of links, users received conversational responses generated by AI. Moreover, this feature reportedly seemed quite polished. The report mentions that functions like Ctrl+click shortcuts worked well, and online users believed that Google was testing a wider update on how people search online.

Big Tech vs Publishers
As online speculations grew, Google immediately explained the situation. Patel clarified on X and said, “This was an error. We’re not planning to make AI Mode the default for Chrome searches.”
Although Google explained the error, this experiment once again raises a broader question about the future of web browsing and AI-powered search. Publishers and content creators have been raising their voices across the globe against the AI-led Search experiences that are reducing visits to their original content sites.
Traditional Google Search still shows links to source websites along with AI-generated summaries. If users are directed into the AI conversations, fewer people will click through to the original news sites, reviews and reports. This will eventually cause a heavy loss to publishers and media outlets globally. Significantly affecting the revenue.
