Jio Call Agent Explained: How It Will Work On Your Phone

One of the biggest tech giants of India, Reliance Jio, has dropped its hat in the ring to catch up on AI and announced multiple features moving forward. One such feature that garnered a lot of attention was the Call Agent by Jio. It will be developed on the Jio network and focused on transcribing calls. booking orders, generating summaries, and a lot more.

What Will Be The Abilities of Jio Call Agent?

In simple terms, the Jio Call Agent can be triggered by just saying Hey Jio during calls. With user permission, it will be able to join conversations to transcribe discussions in real time with support for multiple Indian languages, identify speakers in conference calls, create actionable tasks, and generate summaries. That’s not it; it can also get done with practical tasks in the middle of a call, like ordering food, scheduling appointments, and booking a cab.
At the time of launch, the Jio Call Agent will be available for all Jio subscribers. Expectations are that Jio will not confine the agent behind a paid subscription or something.

What About User Privacy?

Right after the announcement, a lot of people on different social media platforms started claiming that the Jio Call Agent will breach privacy. The claim, however, is slightly misleading.
The Jio agent will not transcribe or generate summaries without the explicit permission of the user themselves. The user will have to say “Hey Jio” to activate the service during the call, which means the receiver will also know about it firsthand.
Jio, while announcing the feature, said it will prioritise user consent and privacy.

Will The Jio Call Agent Record Voice Calls?

It has been confirmed by Jio that the Call Agent will be able to transcribe conversations and generate summaries. However, there is no clarification whether the feature will automatically store the audio recordings or only process conversations in real time.
For those unaware, transcription is not dependent on the permanent storage of audio, and AI can process the conversation in real time, generate a transcript and then discard the audio. But we cannot ignore the fact that there is a chance the conversations will be stored temporarily to train the AI model.

What It Means For Users?

From a user point of view, the integration of Jio Call Agent could entirely change how phone calls are perceived. The feature could become a boon for professionals who indulge in client discussions on call. Apart from that, it will also help the users in multitasking, like booking a cab, ordering food while being on a call, more easily.
From the privacy point of view, if the conversations are stored, then this could be a privacy issue for the masses. Apart from that, the data retention policy of the company has also been under the radar. We at Times Now Digital have reached out to Jio in order to get clarity on the call data storage and other things. We will be updating this article as soon as we get a response.
